Why did I Choose this Path?

One thing I do not look forward to when a new semester starts is introductions. I get the same thing every year when I say I have a social media minor, "Oh, so you are going to study Facebook?" NO! I chose my minor because I believe it is great paired with a marketing major and for how people receive their information today.

When is the last time you got invited to an event or a party? How did you hear about it?
I can say first hand that almost all of my invitations come through Facebook. Rather it is for a family or friends birthday party, Greek Life or other campus event, or a fundraiser, Facebook is a great way to get the word out. The creator of the page can invite whoever they please and allow others to invite who they want. It is also great for reminding of the event you prior to the start time. It is crazy to think that people used to actually send paper invitations and you had RSVP. Now it's the click of a button saying you are going, not going, or maybe.

Facebook is one of many social media sites that get the word out about anything from events to recent news. With Twitter you can easily retweet posts include hashtags that can trace back to the event. Instagram is also a great way to promote an event with a catchy photo.

Social media is also more than invitations, but a promotional tool for businesses and organizations. I chose marketing with a social media minor because I hope to one day work for Nike in their marketing department. Nike is already a huge athletic icon, but it can only grow bigger. How will it do this? By promoting itself through social media. People don't read newspapers anymore or flip through magazines. When I need something, I go straight to the Internet.

Nike has Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages with millions of followers. I hope one day that I can take what I have learned at Ohio Northern and graduate school and apply it to Nike's pages.

Social media is growing everyday and can be improved daily. Why not have experience with social media and have an advantage on others?

  1. Nike is probably the most iconic logo for anything athletic on the planet. When you talk about marketing and social media, if someone see's a swoosh on it, they will almost automatically like it, retweet it, approve it, or most of all, buy it! Court, you have a great head on your shoulders and quite a colorful resume, so I'm sure that Nike will be calling your name someday!

  2. Courtney,

I competently understand why you choose the path you are deciding to take. As you said towards the bottom, Social Media is growing everyday and to stay competitive in this world being one step ahead is key. I know that is why I chose to be a Communication Studies major because communication is key in all aspects of this modern society. My only thought as of right now is when social media takes another leap and bound into the unknown, are you ready to fight for that advantage in that unknown? I wonder if that unknown field might be a place where you can carve a niche for yourself, thus basically requiring Nike to hire you. Social media is so broad that maybe instead of focusing on all of the different options that slight specialization might by key.
    Food for thought,
    Matt
