Our Versions of Gossip Girl

I have been binge watching Gossip Girl recently and I realized Yik Yak is our version of Gossip Girl. If you aren't aware of the TV show Gossip Girl, Gossip Girl is about a group of friends in the Upper Eastside of New York who is frequently in the eye of the mysterious, as of now, Gossip Girl social media outlet. No one is aware of who is behind the website, but anonymous sources send information to her or him and they post it for the world to see. Kind of like the smartphone app, Yik Yak. No one can see who makes posts, making it anonymous. The only difference is no one is sending someone else the information to post, the user posts it themselves.

From last year to this year, I personally believe Yik Yak isn't as popular. I do not have the app, but I do not hear much about it anymore. Which in my opinion is a great thing.

While writing this is post, I thought about the ONU Crushes and Ada Makeouts Twitter accounts. These accounts are ran by an anonymous person who chooses what to post. Anybody can send a tweet in or a picture, but the user specifically picks what to post and what not to post. Similar to Gossip Girl, no one is aware of the user. ONU Crushes or Ada Makeouts have probably caused some problems for some people, but they tend to post semi appropriate things.

Most of these accounts get shut down quickly due to being reported. Accounts like these are a hit for a few days or weeks and die down. Just like Gossip Girl currently is in my show. I’m currently on season five, episode 13 and am wondering what I will do when I finish. I will most likely watch it again.

  1. Courtney - First off, I loved watching Gossip Girl on Netflix, it is still one of my favorite TV series that I watched. On to the Yik Yak topic, I would definitely agree with you when you say that it has died down quite a bit since last year. The Twitter accounts, Ada Makeouts and ONU crushes are very similar to the idea of Gossip Girl as individuals send in pictures and they get posted anonymously. Everyone seems to forget about the site after a few weeks, but then you will have someone remind you of it and it will become popular again. Personally I think it is a good thing that all of these sites have died down a bit, and it'll be interesting to see if someone gets them started again. Happy Netflix watching!

  2. Courtney- Well as you already know, I too am addicted to watching Gossip Girl. So when I saw an article on it, I could not stay away. It is funny that you reference Yik Yak and the twitter accounts to the anonymous user of Gossip Girl because its a lot alike. Granted Yik Yak is more a free posting type app, I still believe it ranks right up there with GG. I remember for the longest time I tried to figure out who was the owner of our ONU Crushes account was, much like the characters of GG attempt to do, but sadly never did. On a slightly unrelated note, Chuck Bass is and will always be my boy regardless of what he sends and has posted to Gossip Girl.
