For everyone who isn't aware of Snapchat, Snapchat is a social media tool used to send short videos and photos in 10 seconds or less. With recent updates to the application, users are no longer able to see who their friends Snapchat. Snapchat used to allow users to view who their friends most snapped, this is referred to as their best friends. The option is no longer available and I'm not the only one upset.
As I was talking about social media topics this evening with friends and one brought up how she was upset Snapchat took away the option to view best friends. I used the word "stalker" because essentially it is what myself and others were. I wasn't looking at my friends best friends to be nosy, it was entertaining. It was like gossip. I am in a group text with some of my close friends back home and I can recall texting each other about peoples Snapchat friends.
I enjoyed this function of Snapchat because it was also a way of keeping tabs on people. As bad as it sounds, it is the truth. Being four hours away and not in constant contact with my friends back home, I could easily see who they Snapchatted or were possibly "talking" too. And "stalking" others always made for a good laugh.
As I have heard rumors that Snapchat plans to bring the best friend function back, I couldn't be more excited!
Courtney- You weren’t the only one who was infuriated when Snapchat took away their best friends setting! Stalker is definitely the right word and I am guilty of frequently stalking people’s best friend’s list. I think that everyone is guilty of stalking someone’s best friends at one point or another. It was so tempting to look and see who was talking to who. It was free entertainment! It always made for a good laugh. I hope the rumors are true and they bring best friends back. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteCourtney - I agree with you that it is always so interesting to see who is everyone best friend on snapchat. I can admit that I am guilt of stalking people's best friend and it is always so interesting to see who was everyone's top. I can also admit that I would text my friends about peoples top friends and we would gossip about who people were talking too. I hope they do bring it back because it was always a good time to see who was everyone's top friends.
ReplyDeleteCourtney- Do not take this the wrong way, but I have mixed emotions about Snapchat getting rid of this feature. I must admit, I too was a "stalker" and used it for the same reasons you stated earlier. I used the feature to keep tabs on people and created gossip that may or may not have been accurate. I beleive I learned bad habits, such as trust issues, from the feature. An example of this was that I constantly was checking to see if the one(s) I cared about was "snapping" another person. Before I knew about the app, I was in perfectly fine with the unknown. I believe that this feature had its positives, such as non-hurtful fun, but I also believe it caused even more trust issues, such as are seen in relationships. In my mind, if Snapchat were to change the feature to fit all parties, it should have made the feature optional. With the feature being optional, I feel it would be good to "stalkers" and the ones who want to keep their social media life to themselves.
ReplyDeleteMatt-
ReplyDeleteI think that is actually a great idea. I never thought about it being optional! If they were to make it optional though, I feel like if you still chose to hide your best friends people would question who you were hiding. As you stated, no matter what you do, it will always have its positives and negatives.
Courtney,
ReplyDeleteFirst off great article. Secondly I showed this to my friend and we spent almost an hour discussing Snapchat as a whole, and a lot of the innovative things they are doing to succeed. As per the article and Snapchats move to take away the top friends I thought it was a good move. I remember seeing countless seems that would mock the top friends and how it "ruined their lives." We were all guilty of checking to see who so and so's top friends were. The whole thing reminded me of myspace, and though there wasn't an overbearing need to be on someones top friends on Snapchat you still enjoyed knowing you were up there. I think ultimately the creators saw this as a potentially bad thing, not so much for the company but for user satisfaction. I think it was a good move to take it off. I know I no longer wonder who my top snaps are or if I am on my friends top list. Great article thanks for sharing!
